Quick rule
although/though + clause · despite/in spite of + noun or -ing · however/nevertheless start a new sentence · whereas contrasts two facts.
Even though it costs more, it lasts twice as long.
In spite of having no budget, they shipped on time.
Rents are rising, whereas wages have stalled.
We moved the servers so that the site would stay up.
Common mistake
✗ Despite it was raining, we walked. → ✓ Despite the rain, we walked. / Although it was raining, we walked.
Short practice
Rewrite with 'despite': 'Although he was ill, he came.' → Despite being ill, he came.
