Why I deleted my news app

For years I started every morning with the same ritual: coffee, phone, news app. I told myself I was 'staying informed'. In truth I was scrolling — half-reading headlines designed to shock me before I'd even brushed my teeth. By 9 a.m. I felt anxious about three countries I'd never visited and exhausted by debates I couldn't influence.

Last month I deleted the app. I didn't stop reading the news; I changed how. Once a day, at lunchtime, I read one long article from a single trusted source. If something major happens, my friends and family tell me. I'm slower to hear about minor stories, and I've decided that's a price worth paying. My attention feels like mine again — and, to my surprise, I think I understand the world a little better, not less.
